Show me a story with multi-layered characters that branch out to diverse audiences and I'll show you the template of a great series. Genevieve Dewey has managed to do in the first installment of the Downey Trilogy what many veteran novelists are never able to achieve: She has introduced rich, interesting characters that the reader wants to continue discovering. Each chapter focuses on the thoughts of a different character, and by the end of the book the reader knows a lot about the characters...but not quite everything. Dewey does a fine job of leaving the reader with the aftertaste of suspense -- for as much as we learn about each character throughout the novel, one can't help but feel that there is still much more to each character. Dewey uses flashbacks very well throughout the story to fill in the blanks and help expose the reader to the history of the characters as well as what makes them tick. Being that the characters are so diverse, each reader will have their own favorites. I was personally taken to the Agent James Hoffman character as well as the Mickey Downey character. Each character is enhanced by the use of strong dialogue -- which is one of the bigger strengths of the novel.

First, I Love You features the conflicted relationship between Detective Tommy Gates and his retired mob boss father, Mickey Downey. There are many storylines in the book, as each character has more than one thing going on at the same time. The themes of the novel are so varied that to categorize this book as one type of novel would be asinine. This is a series of crime investigation, mob action, romance, and of course -- family. This "gangstamance" reads like a cross between Pulp Fiction and General Hospital, with strong dialogue, good quotes, humor, action and drama. They say that the sequel is rarely as good as the original, but I have a hunch that much like the career of this promising new author: the Downey Trilogy will only get better.

Although the story starts a bit slow, with the introduction of various characters in a brief period of time, the true action begins with the first meeting between Tommy, a police officer, and his father, an allegedly retired wiseguy. The name of the book comes from the father's salutation in letters to his seldom-seen son. From their first encounter, the story goes into high gear.

These two characters, and the others that are intertwined in their lives, are what make this novel. Each new chapter represents a specific character's point of view Mary, Tommy's mother; Kiki, Tommy's half-sister; James, his friend and fellow officer; Ginny, another law enforcement officer and possible love interest. The reader is allowed into their hearts and minds, and we learn what motivates them, who they love and what their fears are. This approach promotes the reader's ability to identify with these people, a must for making a good, readable book. One in which a reader is totally invested, and one they want more of. Luckily, this is the first book in a trilogy.

We learn about each character's involvement, whether willingly or unwillingly, in the life of a career criminal, Mickey Downey, and it is told mostly in conversations among the various individuals, all of whom are interconnected in some way. There are numerous misunderstandings among them, mostly motivated by the desire to save the others from harm, but which often end up having the opposite effect. Although the conversational technique is effective in conveying information and helping the reader understand their motivations, at times, I couldn't help but wish for less conversation and more action. Some of the dialog could have been edited without ill effect, or an activity could have replaced the discussion to convey an idea. This is only a minor criticism, however, as the author aptly tells a complicated story.

This book could have been just another mafia tale without much substance or character development. Happily, it was none of those things. It's the story of family ties, love blossoming under complicated circumstances, and how a family pulling together can overcome tremendous odds. That is what keeps me reading and wanting more, and I'll bet other readers will feel the same. The author deftly ends the first book of the trilogy with an open ending, but without leaving the reader feeling dissatisfied. All in all, a very good read.
As my first mob related book, I will have to say that I greatly enjoyed this read. Dewey has a way of telling a story through the eyes of the characters that will make you feel a closeness to each and every one of them Tommy, Mary, Michael, Kiki, Joey, Ginny and even James.

While this is a great novel, it is also packed with criminal action, mafia rundowns, separate love stories, and family issues that you will only find yourself wanting to become a part of. While Michael (aka Magic Mickey) Downey is supposed to be the "bad" mafia dad that's supposedly "retired", I found him to be a character that I was rooting for the whole read.

What was great about this novel was Dewey's ability to explain enough of the mafia to give what you needed, but didn't stray away from the story underneath the investigation. While Tommy, Ginny, and James work on a case together to bring down big names in the mafia Outfits, there is also several love stories mixed in that have you completely drawn to the characters and their own stories.

Tommy and Michael's father and son relationship is one that will have you feeling many different mixed emotions; love, frustration, and sometimes anger. For me, I was equally frustrated with Mary and Michael's relationship, wishing both would suck it up and have the big conversation they needed to move forward. And by the end of book, I was equally frustrated with Tommy and Ginny, while loving James and Kiki's relationship.

I look forward to reading Dewey's second work in The Downey Series, "Second Of All". I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a great mixture of great writing, love stories, family feuds, organized crime, and mystery.
