I lived through the era when getting pregnant brought shame to the family. This story had to be written by a man because I cannot imagine a woman writing a story about a middle class, well bred family and mother who would totally abandon her daughter without hearing an explanation from her. What this mother heard was merely hearsay. If they were the outstanding family as the author portrayed, they would have gone to San Francisco to see for themselves what happened to their beloved daughter. The story was not believable. All the fine values the protagonist says were taught by the father were obviously ignored by the teacher. I finished the book but I was very turned off by the behavior of the parents. The author was trying to make a point about honor and accountability, but his characters, the father and mother who were the so called example were definitely less then reliable.Tags : Raising Redemption [R. This is an exceptional read! Especially for a first book from this author. I quickly got hooked on the story and could not wait to return home every day to continue reading. The characters real life situations, emotions, lessons, and feelings kept me interested and involved in the story and made me hope that a sequel was being written!
Although this novel was quite long; it was captivating holding me captive until I had completed it. The characters , Alicia,Celia, and mama lil held my attention. The struggles of Alicia and the reunion with the son that she had given away at birth. The forgiveness between she and her parents and the success she attained signified redemption raised.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I became so engrossed with the characters like they were real people. You will go through a range of emotions reading this and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would love to see this made into a movie!
This book was sooo good, I did not want to put it down. It held my interest from the beginning to the ending, and the end was so good. I hope this author writes more books like this one. Waiting for the movie. It relates to real life situations. Want another book from this author.
Like many other reviewers, I kept promising myself to no avail, just a few more pages then lights out. Families like other institutions, often find it expedient to modify reality through silence. Within the community Russell portrays, silence exists in three dimensions; regional, generational, and cultural. The fact that this silence is multicultural in construct but universal in context gives the book a unique voice. This book will open every readers sensitivity to the powerful potential of "whats not being said".
The author has crafted a wonderful original story of a family matriarch and the legacy she leaves her family. Even with all the adversary each family member struggles through they find their way back home and share a family bond that stretches beyond their blood ties but to others as well. A wonderful lesson in humility, compassion an unconditional love.
Raising redemption is a thought-provoking and heart-warming story of a young girl driven to meet and even exceed her parents' high expectations of her who, in a moment of youthful rebellion and carelessness changes her life dramatically for the worst. An out-of-wedlock baby, estrangement from her family, her dreams of Radcliffe unfulfilled, and the belief that she had so disappointed her family that they may never forgive her, make this a compelling drama of heartbreak and redemption.
Despite these dire realities, with help from some new friends in a new place she triumphs over these circumstances, and shows herself and her family what she truly is made of. While the main characters in this book are the extended family of a successful African-American doctor, this is truly an American story showing the triumph of the American spirit, and the sense of belonging and completeness of a loving family.
