Thirty-two-year-old Polly Waterford has had the most unfortunate luck lately. Her longtime boyfriend loses interest in her when their graphic design firm in Plymouth, England goes bankrupt and they have to sell their posh flat. She decides to escape for a little while to the seaside town of Mount Polbearne and ends up staying much longer than she originally plans. During her stay, she meets some of the nicest people while doing what she loves the most, baking bread. Polly starts to relax and discovers who she really is and what makes her the happiest.

This is a difficult review for me to write because I really wanted to like this book. I've read a couple other books by Jenny Colgan and loved them so I was excited to start this one. The cover made my mouth water because I love food and I was hopeful that Little Beach Street Bakery would be similar to Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe and Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe but for me, this book fell way short. There were parts of it that were interesting and held my attention but personally, I found the book somewhat boring. I persisted, hoping that the second half of the book would pick up and change my opinion but unfortunately, no such luck. I know there is a difference in writing styles between American authors and British authors and most of the time, I am able to appreciate and enjoy books written by authors who aren't American. For some reason, I couldn't get into this book and it took me almost a week to read it. Generally, a book of this length takes me a few days to read. It also seemed to end abruptly and I was perplexed as to what happened. Maybe others will enjoy this book but Little Beach Street Bakery just didn't do it for me. I still plan to read some of Jenny Colgan's other books because I loved the Cupcake Cafe books. If you enjoyed those books as well, you may not find Little Beach Street Bakery to be as good. Sadly, I was actually happy to finish it.

Little Beach Street Bakery A Novel Jenny Colgan 9780062371225 Books Reviews

If you know me, I’m a sucker for anything horror, thriller/mystery, and fantasy. But my brain needs a break from death and destruction every once in a while. I don’t read a lot of contemporary. I’ve read only one Jenny Colgan book prior to this, which was The Bookshop on the Corner. I adored it so much that I wanted to read more of Colgan’s work.

Little Beach Street Bakery follows a 32 year old woman named Polly who falls into a financial crisis, splits from her long term boyfriend, and moves to a quaint, seaside village in England. She befriends a group of local fishermen, and rediscovers her love for baking. Reading this book was like the equivalent of wrapping myself in a warm blanket… a blanket made out of thick slices of toast slathered in jam and butter.

I found myself relating so much to Polly. Moving to a new city, trying to fit in, healing an injured animal (there is a PUFFIN in this book, people!), and just trying to navigate a new life. I felt so much for her! Also, I dare you to read this book without getting hungry. You will want to eat ALLLL the bread! This book was such a delicious treat, and a perfect vacation read.
Jenny Colgan is one of my favourite writers, and I was jumping to the roof when I won this book. Thank you Agi from www.onmybookshelf.blog.pl/. So I started to read immediately after the arrival, and here below are my thoughts.

The story is centered around Polly, a woman in her thirties, who loses the job and her boyfriend. Her long term boyfriend lost his business, so they bankrupted. He leaves her and goes back home to his mother, and Polly is left on her own, so she goes to the only place she can afford, Cornwall. Cornwall is such a different place. In that old cottage, Polly finds a friend, an injured puffin. Neil is not her pet, he is her only friend in the lonely nights. Not knowing what to do with herself, Polly starts to bake. She has always loved baking, but for her ex-boyfriend, it was just goofing around. Her fresh bread smells all around the cottage, so local fishermen soon become her friends. Especially Tarnie. Huckle also becomes a person close to her heart, but things with Chris, her ex, aren't settled yet. Polly is new in the town, and the old lady who owns the local bakery isn't happy with her baking for the fishermen. Polly has to find a way to win her heart and finally settle down and decide what she wants in life.

I can always connect with Ms. Colgan main characters, that's why I love her books so much. I'm also in my thirties, and I also love to bake. Polly is such an adorable character. She has a heart of gold, she is always there to help. She is also very moral, I was so proud of her when she broke up the relationship as soon as she found out the guy was married. Polly also cares about animals, the image of caring Neil in the rucksack makes me giggle.

The story for The Little Beach Street Bakery is so warm and sprinkled with flour and sugar. It's not just a story for cooking, but also for being brave and taking the things in your own hands again. It's about making life worth living. It is an enjoyable warm story that will melt your heart. Totally recommended.
