When the Red-Headed Kid walks into his mother’s kitchen one day in 1951, with a goldfish in one hand and a duck in the other, she is not happy. Her immediate reaction, “What am I going to do with a duck?” pretty well sums up what any mother would say. But, that's before the family meets Duck Rudy. When he comes fluttering out of the Chinese take-out carton the Kid is carrying, chirping at the top of his lungs and flapping his fuzzy little wings, it's love at first sight. For ducky, it's a relief. Ever since he started working at the carnival, he's been confused. He can't find his mommy. There's hardly any room in the big basket he shares with the other birdies, and none of them are friendly. Then, he's picked up by a big hand and dropped into that little box, and it's dark in there — he's so scared he almost chirps himself hoarse before he's rescued. For Red, raising the little guy will be one of the great joys of his life. When they meet, he doesn't even know how much he needs something to love. But, then, they're threatened with separation and his grief is almost more than a little boy can bear. Thus, begins the story of a boy and his duck; a gentle tale of love and loss, and a remarkable train trip home. From THE RED-HEADED KID by Jan Ewing, available on the from Books.

The cover is wonderful, but don't let it mislead you. This is not some "cute" story for children (not that children, particularly young adults, would not enjoy it). It is a story for anyone who has had a pet that became a member of the family. The fact that this pet is a duck, of course, lifts it out of the ordinary. But dog lovers, cat lovers, all animal lovers will relate. The author has a wonderful ability to evoke the scene, the characters - including the younger edition of himself as well as the duck - and the emotions. His language, the sense that he is talking to you personally, sweeps the reader along. Best of all, the story has a happy ending. A chapter from a longer work, though it stands totally on its own, it whets one's appetite for more.

Ducky Takes the Train The RedHeaded Kid edition by Jan Ewing Children eBooks Reviews

"Ducky" is a wonderful introduction to this writer's work! The story is so moving that I found myself recalling similarly formative moments, both sad and happy, in my own childhood as I read it. The narrator too seems to relive the joy of his unexpected friendship with the duck, and the agony of their separation. Ultimately, however, the story has a surprising and happy end. Truly a wonderful story--one that I've reread many times!
Really enjoyed very sweet book of child growing and learning about life.
This is a great tale of ducks, dogs a red headed boy and his loving family. For this handsome young duck we experience his life growing up as a southern California drake, running with his dog friend and red headed boy Mommy. Then life becomes really up in the air when he is left stranded with two honery female ducks. Things can't get much worse. Will this story find a happy end? Will our red headed boy and his Ruddy Duck re-unite? This is a must read for all audiences. Welcome!
